INTRODUCTION:

Malaysia has introduced a new mechanism for sanctioning data protection breaches. Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission and the Commissioner for PDPA has issued a Personal Data Standards in 2015 as part of the law. Furthermore, on March 15 2016, The Personal Data Protection, (Compounding Offences) Regulations 2016, came into force. A sure indication of more prosecutions ahead. Companies disregarding the PDPA law could expect penalties under the Criminal Law stretching from RM100, 000 to RM500,000 plus a jail term. The new compounding mechanism is expected to ease the current backlog of data protection prosecution cases and may signal the start of a stronger enforcement of Malaysian data protection legislation.

The workshop is designed to disseminate information and practice on Personal Data Protection Act in Malaysian with regards to the processing of personal data and compliance with the 7 data protection principles. Participants will also get exposure to the Personal Data Protection Standards 2015.
